North Texans: If you feel like gambling, there’s good news for you.
The casino many in North Texas head to — the WinStar Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma — will reopen Wednesday.
WinStar, like other casinos across the country, has been closed since mid-March because of the rapid spread of coronavirus.
But just know that if you decide to head there soon, some things will be a little different.
You’ll have your temperature taken before you get to go inside. If it’s 100.4 or higher, you’ll be asked to go home and talk to your doctor.
Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley said businesses everywhere are starting to reopen and he’s not surprised that WinStar is among them.
But he said he won’t plan a trip there with his mother-in-law, who is a fan of casinos, for about a month, just to see how it goes.
“They are going to figure this out,” he said. “We’ve got to begin to open this up again and just be careful.”
A note on the WinStar website lays out some changes:
? The number of people inside will be no more than 25% the building’s capacity. And even though casinos traditionally never close, WinStar will shut its doors between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. every day for a “deep-cleaning of all areas of the gaming floor using electrostatic spraying techniques with EPA-certified chemicals.”
? Some electronic games will be moved. Poker, table games, bingo and off-track betting are suspended until further notice.
? People will be encouraged to social distance. To help with that, every other chair will be removed from electronic games.
? Hand sanitizer stations will be throughout the casino. Customers and employees alike will have to wear face masks or some face covering.
? And, when the occupancy limit is reached, the casino will let customers wait outside until they can enter.
Tarrant County Public Health Director Vinny Taneja said North Texans should “make a wise decision” for themselves and their families if they decide to head to a casino.
“If you’re going to be out, make sure you social distance and wear a mask.”

Several tribal casinos in California are beginning the reopening process, but Gov. Gavin Newsom is urging them otherwise.
When Is Win River Casino Reopening
Win-River Resort & Casino, a tribal resort in Northern California, opened last Friday, and three San Diego area tribal properties are scheduled to open this week. On Saturday, Newsom wrote a letter to tribal leaders asking them to hold off on their plans.
According to a report from the Los Angeles Times,Newsom cited public health concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the plea to the tribes.
“I understand that some tribal governments are planning on reopening casinos on their lands,” wrote Newsom. “This deeply concerns me, and I urge tribal governments to reconsider and instead make those determinations based on how they align with the current local public health conditions and the statewide stage of reopening.”
It would be unlawful for Newsom to force tribal bodies to wait for state approval for reopening. Instead, he is asking the tribes to wait until the state enters the third phase of Newsom’s reopening plan before casinos begin conducting business.
It is unlikely that the San Diego-area casinos comply with Newsom’s request as many tribal governments use gaming as its main source of funding. The Viejas Casino & Resort is scheduled to open Monday, Sycuan Casino Resort on Wednesday and Valley View Casino on Friday.
Win River Casino Reopening Today
Aside from struggling revenue numbers, casino openings in other states have shown that there is plenty of consumer demand when the openings begin. The historic South Dakota mining town of Deadwood was the first city to allow its residents to gamble again a couple of weeks ago and the casinos enjoyed a massive turnout.
Five Phoenix-area casinos were open for business again last Friday, and according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, there was a long line of gamblers waiting to enter Harrah’s Ak-Chin casino when doors opened at 9 a.m.
Harrah’s Ak-Chin, Ft. McDowell Casino, and three Gila River properties opened Friday morning. None of which opened its poker rooms.
Win River Casino Reopening
Most of its San Diego counterparts are doing the same with their poker rooms, with the exception of Jamul Casino, which will spread poker games with 50 percent reduced rake and five-handed tables.
