Unlock and remove the battery first.

Unscrew all screws from the bottom case. You can remove the bottom case.
Sell x240 and buy one of these notebooks many are available up to i7 and two memory slots. Even the newest x series is still 1 slot. Best thing for 12.5' notebooks are with my preferred choices on M.2 slots over mPCIe. HP EliteBook 820 G3 skylake 12.5' 2x memory slots DDR4, M.2 NVMe-SSD OR SATA (requires a 2.5' caddy). Open the latches on both sides of the slot at the same time, and then remove the memory module Save the removed memory module for future use. Place the notched end of the new memory module toward the contact edge side of the memory slot, and insert the memory module into the slot at an angle of about 20 degrees. When bottom case removed, you can access RAM, heat sink, cooling fan, SSD, wireless card and built-in battery.
Remove three screws securing the battery.
Unplug the battery power cable from the motherboard. You can remove the battery.

Remove one screw securing the SSD.
Disconnect the cable from the motherboard.
It comes with a Samsung 512GB SSD.
In the next step, we will remove the ram.
Remove the RAM.
The laptop features an SK Hynix 8GB memory.
Disconnect two antennas and remove one screw, the wireless card can be removed.

Loosen four screws and disconnect the fan cables. The heat sink and cooling fan can be removed.

Hi all,I'm considering buying an X240, mostly because of the screen resolution. One downside of the X240, is that it only accepts 1 single SODIMM, which to now were only available up to 8GB sizes. I do need more than that to process the datasets I use.
Has anybody tested these? Does the BIOS allow for 16GB?

They appear to have a module code IMM2G64D3(L)SOD8AG which appears to be the first 16GB, and can do DDR3-1600. They may become available by mid April at $300

On the other hand, it was 'undocumented' that 2 8GB sticks could be used in X2xx series back in the day..
Adding a bit more info
A person from intelligentmemory says that a Haswell machine will not work with these chips, unless a change of the memory reference code, which is part of the BIOS. It is not yet 100% sure if it can be fixed by a BIOS update or not. On March 10, 2014, they did have a customer make it work on an Ivybridge E by modifying the memory reference code. Lenovo could work with Intel, and change this code.
